The partnership between Scott and White Healthcare and Walgreens has been selected by the federal government to become an ACO, or an Accountable Care Organization.

That means the partnership will help give adequate service and be responsible for patients using federal healthcare assistance.

In an effort to reduce the cost of Medicare across the country, 106 healthcare providers have been designated to help provide those services.

The Scott and White Walgreens Well Network is just one of more than 250 ACOs that have been established since the passage of President Obama's Affordable Health Care Act.

"It gets Walgreens more involved in the day-to-day process of clinical care and it gives us a partner to help us get better at what we call 'continuum care," said Dr. Roy Smythe of Scott and White.

"This is really a quality initiative and not an economical one. The money that will be passed down is miniscule. This is really just an effort to get us better at this," said Smythe.

Organizations who take part must meet 33 different quality measures to keep the ACO label.
