HILL COUNTY -- An elderly man is still in critical condition Wednesday after he was shot twice by a Hill County deputy trying to defend herself.
It happened last night near Whitney when a man called 911, claiming there was someone armed in his attic and holding another person hostage.
When Deputy Emily Wright arrived, Monte Moore, 84, came outside with a .22-caliber rifle.
Deputy Wright then worked to take his weapon away.
"During the struggle she attempted to deploy her Taser and that failed. In the mean time he struck her several times in the face and in the mouth and at one point had begun to choke her. When he was choking her, that's when she drew her service weapon and fired twice," Hill County Sheriff Deputy Stephen Girsh said in a phone interview.
The shots hit Moore in the stomach and upper left chest. He was flown to a hospital in Fort Worth for surgery.
Deputy Wright went to a hospital in Hillsboro but was released shortly after. The Texas Rangers are now investigating.
