A house in Temple caught on fire with an older couple and their pets inside the home early Thursday morning.

Temple Fire and Rescue responded to the call around 2:00 a.m.. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames coming from the back of the house.

Several pets were killed in the fire, but officials say the husband and wife made it out safely for only one reason. They credit the safety of the couple to the working smoke alarm in the house, which gave them early notification to get out.

The husband's stepson says he is thankful that his parents made it out safely, but sadly, three cats and two dogs did not make it out. He says his parents loved their pets as if they were children and are devastated about their loss.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
