BELLMEAD -- Local little leagues are stepping up as a former coach is charged with more counts of sexual assault of a child.

60-year-old Larry Mammen, who used to work at the La Vega little league complex, is now charged with seven total counts of sexual assault of a child. On top of that, he's charged with five counts of indecency with a child.

Mammen apparently assaulted players on the teams he coached and has admitted to it.

The President of La Vega Little League, Carlos Luna, tells us many parents knew Mammen, and it's been difficult news to handle.

"It's a shock to La Vega Little League. No little league wants to have to deal with any situation as what we're dealing with. We are, however, reinforcing our procedures," said Luna.

He says La Vega and other district little leagues will be checking the backgrounds of any volunteers on or around the playing fields.

He's also asking parents to be present during games and practices just to be safe.
