BEVERLY HILLS -- In the middle of the night a Beverly Hills woman in her 50's was woken up by her dog to the smell of smoke in the 800 Block of Acree Acres.

First on the scene was Valley Mills volunteer firefighter James Burt.

"He went to the side where her bedroom was, ended up knocking an air conditioner out of the window and pulling her and her dog to safety," Beverly Hills firefighter Thomas Schmidt said.

The woman believes it was started by a space heater but the official cause is still under investigation. But the damage is devastating.

"Pretty much the living room and I believe her kitchen and kinda like dining area were pretty much a total loss," Schmidt said.

But the woman and her dog are safe tonight thanks to quick thinking by James Burt.

"To him he might not have done much but to me, you know, he's a hero."
