New Year's Eve is just around the corner. This night is ranked the number two night, for the most drunken driving accidents.
Waco Transit has partnered with the Waco Police Department and the Texas Department of Transportation for their 6th annual Safe Ride Home program. This community program ensures that people will not be drinking and driving this New Year's Eve.
Waco Transit will pick you up from your house, take you to your new year's eve event, and take you home safely at the end of the night. This program began in 2005, with a total of seven passengers, and served 300 last New Year's Eve. They begin their driving service at 6:00 pm, and run through 2:30 in the morning.
When someone has been drinking, their judgement and motor skills are impaired, affecting not only their own safety, but the safety of everyone else on the road. Mothers Against Drunk Driving is another organization that promotes safe driving, especially during the holiday season.
Joyce Denke, a member of MADD says that when that happens, "a car key becomes a murder weapon, and that murder weapon is in that persons hands. They stick that key in the ignition, and they load that murder weapon with several bullets." She encourages no one to feel ashamed or too proud to call a safe ride, because that one decision, could save lives.
To reserve a free safe ride home, contact the Waco Transit office. They will also be accepting last minute calls on New Year's Eve, to provide a safe alternative to everyone.
