BELTON -- The search for a Killeen man who possibly drowned in Lake Belton Tuesday was called off this afternoon.

Officials say the 26-year-old man fell off a tube being towed behind a boat when he went under and never resurfaced.

He was not wearing a life jacket and it's believed he may have gotten stuck in trees due to the low lake levels.

Another reason game wardens stress the importance of wearing a life jacket.

"It's been a long, hot, dry summer here in Central Texas, all throughout Texas. One thing to keep in mind is the the uncertainty of lake levels. When they drop there's going to be either a tree stump or debris that you never noticed there before. So obviously accidents can happen very quickly,"said Justin Valchar, a Texas Game Warden.

Valchar said it's important to be aware that when water levels do rise, more debris and trees that come from rivers can settle into the lake as well.

And to take extra precaution even in you're normal swimming areas because the terrain underneath always changes especially during a drought.
