Shelters reaching capacity during this cold season
With nearly 500 homeless people in the Waco area, the shelters are running out of room, especially this week as temperatures continue to drop. When temperatures are below 34 degrees, a solution is always available to get people out of the cold, but bed space is limited.
The number of women in the Meyer's Center has recently doubled. Because there are no family shelters in Waco, the women can only stay in the emergency program, on a night to night basis.
One main reason for the lack of space, is lack of funding. Officials say they are hoping that more churches will step up and help with this situation, by volunteering and opening up portions of their facilities.
Director of the Meyer's Center says they are doing all they can with the available funds, but it doesn't seem to be enough.
Until more space is available, this problem is expected to continue, especially through this cold season.
