WACO -- Yesterday was the start of a new school year for Speegleville Elementary students as they joined in with the big kids at River Valley Intermediate.

With the two schools combined there are about 800 kids in a building fit for 900.

Midway ISD officials say they keep the two schools fairly separate but aside from everyone going to the same school it's just business as usual.

"Everything went really well from all reports, we're really excited. Traffic was heavy but that's actually pretty typical for any school the first week of school. And there's little logistical things we're working out about how to make it as smooth as possible but it really went well," said Traci Marlin, Midway ISD spokesperson.

Speegleville Elementary is under construction after an intentional fire was set by the school nurse on August 9.

Students can expect to return to their old school as early as December.
