WACO -- Today in Waco, teachers from several central Texas school districts were educated on gang behavior and its impact on schools.
A speaker from the Texas Youth Commission discussed the rise in school and community-based gang activity, highlighting the increased risk our youth face by joining a gang.
The focus was on identifying characterisitcs of gang members and ways to discourage it in a school environment.
"When we think of children and gangs, often times, we don't do a really good job of meeting the needs of all children educational environments in terms of addressing their needs to belong, addresing their self-esteem issues and so on. And so children look for other outlets to have those needs met," said Gwendolyn Ryan, an education specialist.
Ryan says the goal is to find a solution to enhance a students' ability to be more effective in a learning environment and more connected to school.
