WACO -- Waco ISD officials discover the old University Middle School, which has been vacant for less than four months, is badly vandalized.
The school now has broken windows, torn-up blinds and inside the building wires and insulation are hanging from the ceiling.
There's also evidence of copper theft.
Police said this is a prime example of how a vacant building can become a playground for criminals.
"What happens is you get an element that notices that and then realize that on the inside of that is some pretty valuable stuff copper wiring, copper tubing, air conditioning parts, maybe computer things that are left over if it's business related. So they'll make that a target," said Sgt. Patrick Swanton, Waco police spokesman.
People living across the street from the school wouldn't go on camera but told Fox 44 they've had plates and a bicycle stolen from outside their home.
And that area has become more dangerous in recent years..
