Nearly 80 percent of wildfires start within two miles of residential neighborhoods. Current drought conditions, low humidity, and high winds, can cause a fire to spread rapidly.

Officials say there are several ways to protect yourself, and your house, from these dangers.

Casey Garcia, with the Hewitt Fire Department says, "make sure your grass is cut. Keep your lawn watered. Don't do any recreational burning."

The Texas Forest Service says to obey all fire work restrictions, remove your natural Christmas tree soon after the holidays, and throw away wrapping paper and boxes properly.

Fire Marshalls say to keep water, and a fire extinguisher close by, just in case a fire starts.
