Texas teachers forced to take competency exam

The U.S. government says Texas is in violation of the No Child Left Behind plan and they are giving the state a week to come up with a plan.
The Texas Education Agency will over see the process.
The agency says first-year teachers in elementary and some middle schools who did not take a generalist exam on core subjects are not in compliance with federal standards.
The exam is meant to make sure teachers are highly qualified.
Federal officials did exempt teachers who specialize in music, art and similar courses from the generalist exam.
