Killeen police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a backpack with chemicals to make methamphetamines being found at a local closed hotel.

Killeen PD Spokeswoman Carroll Smith says the backpack was discovered around 10:30 p.m. by a security officer patroling the area on Tuesday night at the old Howard Johnson Hotel, located in the 800 block of East Central Texas Expressway.

"There was no one around. It was found by security in a closed hotel. The hotel has been shut down for several years. And, they just happened to find it. And, it was identified as chemicals used to make methamphetamines," said Smith.

Smith said Central Texas Hazmat team was called in to properly dispose of the chemicals, as they can be very dangerous. Killeen Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
