In an effort to better protect and serve you, the Killeen Police Department is voluntarily placing themselves under the microscope this week.

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) arrived December 2 to examine all aspects of the department, including administration, operations, personnel, and support services.

If Killeen PD meets all the standards, they will gain reaccreditation. That's a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence.

"When somebody from the outside comes in and looks at what you're doing and says you're doing a good job, it makes you feel good," said Margaret Young, Chief of Staff for Killeen Police Department.

The department first received advanced accreditation in 2009. They won't find out the results of this assessment until march of next year.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Killeen Police Department's ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA®), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia 20155.

The CALEA program manager for the Killeen Police Department is Mr. Steve Mitchell. The assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.

Once the CALEA Assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be reaccredited.

Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
