With more than 50,000 undergraduates calling Texas A&M home, sexual assaults are bound to happen, you just don't hear about it.

That's because Dr. Jeanette Madkins with Texas A&M's Student Counseling Service says it's an under-reported crime.

"There are a lot of factors that contribute to that but in general it's very difficult for a survivor to come forward and report that they've been victimized through a form of sexual aggression," Dr. Madkins said.

But on Sunday one student did and now 19-year-old Shane Jasek of Georgetown is behind bars accused of sexual assault.

We're told Jasek and the victim were watching TV in her dorm room when she fell asleep.

According to police reports the victim woke up to find Jasek raping her.

"The victim told the investigator she had been sexually assaulted earlier in the evening in her campus dorm by an acquaintance," said Lt. Allan Baron with Texas A&M's University Police Department.

It's a case that Dr. Madkins says is unfortunately far too common.

"It is very, yes, it's more common that it happens with someone they know and that actually complicates reporting too."

Dr. Madkins says if you've experienced any type of sexual assault there are resources on campus like the Student Counseling Service to get confidential help.

Their number is: (979) 845-4427.

The SCS helpline number is: (979) 845-2700

Jasek was arrested Thursday night by University Police. He's in the Brazos County Jail on $11,000 bail.
