Longview, TX (KWKT) — LeTourneau University’s commencement will feature U. S. House Rep. Louie Gohmert of Tyler, as the keynote speaker at two separate ceremonies Saturday, May 4, at the LeTourneau University main campus, 2100 South Mobberly Ave., in Longview.
The first ceremony will be at 9:00 a.m.,. for over 211 students graduating from the Longview campus. A second ceremony will be at 1 p.m.,. for 126 working adult students from the university’s Dallas education center and online program.
Gohmert represents 12 counties in East Texas in the First District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He is serving his fifth term and was the first Republican to hold the seat since the 1870's.
Gohmert was first sworn in January 4, 2005 and is now serving his fourth term.
He serves on the House Judiciary committee which has jurisdiction over constitutional issues, the Federal courts, crime, law enforcement and immigration. He and is vice chair of the subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. He serves on the House Natural Resources committee which oversees domestic energy production, mining, and public lands issues. He serves on the Energy and Mineral Resources subcommittee and the National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands subcommittee. Some of his innovative solutions to economic issues have gained widespread support.
Prior to his election to Congress, Gohmert was elected to three terms as a district judge in Smith County, Texas, and was appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to complete a term as chief justice of the 12th Court of Appeals.
Gohmert earned his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, where he was class president and served as a brigade commander of the Corps of Cadets. He was also class president while attending Baylor School of Law. He is a veteran having served his country as captain in the U.S. Army as a result of an Army scholarship at Texas A&M University.
LeTourneau University will hold a second commencement ceremony featuring Dr. Steve Condon, LETU’s vice president for Enrollment Services, for 70 of its Houston and Austin Educational Centers at 10 a.m.,. Saturday, May 11, at the worship center of Houston’s First Baptist Church, 7401 Katy Freeway in Houston.
