The city of Belton has received nearly $3 million to help fund the 9th Avenue project.

The Killeen-Temple Metropolitan Organization will give the city federal dollars to help extend 9th Avenue from Loop 121 to University Drive.

Connecting the two major roadways in town should alleviate traffic along Main Street as well, especially with Mary Hardin Baylor right next door.

City leaders say the extension will also improve emergency response times by nearly two minutes.

The project was ranked first of four in the area to be considered for the funds.

Construction should start in early 2014.

“This will allow University traffic to exit onto Loop 121 easier, and that will create less traffic on Main Street. That’s the goal: to get traffic off of Main," said Paul Romer of Belton.

The entire project will cost nearly $6 million.
