Thursday marks the Cameron Park Zoo’s 20th birthday.

The zoo was originally started in 1955 as the Central Texas Zoological Park, next to the Brazos River. In 1981, a master plan was developed to expand the zoo, which led to a bond in 1989. The bond allowed the zoo to expand and relocate into Cameron Park on 52 acres of land. The new and improved zoo was then opened to the public on July 18, 1993.

In celebration of the 20 year milestone, the zoo will be having an invite-only icecream social at the zoo. Over the weekend, the zoo will be “rolling back admission prices to the prices they offered when the zoo opened in 1993”.

That means adults 13 and older will be $4, children four to12 years will be $2, and children three and under will be free. No additional discounts will be available, and no coupons will be accepted. This discount will only be available on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21. The zoo will return to normal admission rates and offers on July 22.
