STAAR testing is coming up next week for many students across the state, and some Waco ISD parents say they are 'opting out' of testing this year.

STAAR testing replaced TAKS tests in 2012, requiring a series of annual assessments in order for students to graduate. Local parents, like Kyle and Jennie Massey have written a letter to Waco ISD and created a website announcing their fourth grader wouldn't take the exams. The Massey's are also holding a session this saturday for parents wanting info on opting out for their students.
Currently, the STAAR test's guidelines say a student can't opt out, but there are no written consequences for opting out either.

STAAR test guidelines are not the law. The law says that I can opt my child out of school activities that are contrary to my moral beliefs. The STAAR test and how it is used in Texas schools is certainly against my moral beliefs. We are opting out.
