Central Connecticut State University officials told everyone there to get indoors and seek shelter around noon Monday after someone reported seeing a man with a gun on campus, university spokesman Mark McLaughlin said.

Police were concentrating their search Monday afternoon at James Hall, a residence building that houses about 200 students. Officers were going room to room there, and no shots had been reported, McLaughlin said.

No injuries were immediately reported, either, New Britain Mayor Tim O'Brien told reporters nearly two hours after the university instructed people on campus to seek shelter.

"Campus emergency. Seek shelter. Lock doors, close windows. We will communicate when we have more info. This is not a drill," CCSU said on Twitter.

A message on the school's website instructed readers not only to get inside buildings, but to stay away from windows.

State police are helping school police check the campus, Connecticut State Police spokesman Paul Vance said.

The school is in New Britain, about 7 miles southwest of Hartford.
