LEON COUNTY -- A couple is dead tonight in rural Leon County after an apparent murder-suicide.
Investigators believe the husband shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself late Wednesday afternoon.
Lauren Holman traveled to the small community today and spoke with a neighbor who's in complete shock about the news.
Leon County investigators arrived at this home on FM 977 around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. They say they got a call from the couple's children saying they found their parents inside with gunshot wounds.
Neighbor Joe Lee Copeland had just finished up at vacation bible school and was on his way home.
"I came up over that hill and there was law men and a helicopter and everything going on down there and I didn't know what had happened."
KYLE 28 tried to speak with Sheriff Jerry Wakefield today. He refused to go one camera but he told us when officers responded they found the couple inside both suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.
The wife was pronounced dead at the scene and the husband was life-flighted to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Copeland is still in shock, "You never think anything like this could happen here at home and then it does."
Copeland said the couple, who were both in their 80's, had been sick for quite some time and that the wife had been suffering from Alzheimer.
"That happened yesterday and I thought that maybe she had just passed on but then I come to find out that wasn't the case," said Copeland. "It's just a shock, a big shock."
The name of the victims are not being released at this time.
Both bodies were sent for autopsies.
