Downtown parking enforcement in Waco helps businesses

Friday, April 5, 2013 - 1:38pm

Parking enforcement has been in effect for almost a week now in downtown Waco, and already there has been some improvements.

The Waco Improvement District spent five thousand dollars to hire an off-duty officer to randomly patrol Austin Avenue, looking for hour parking violators. Over time, businesses have reported these parking spots have been used for eight hour parking, in turn hindering their business. Since the enforcement began on April 1, Waco PD says they've written about ten tickets.

"It's more of a community policing effort to try and get everybody involved in solving a problem down there. The problem is people parking in a two hour parking zone for maybe the entire eight hour day that they are working," said Waco PD Spokesman Patrick Swanton.

Tickets for violating the parking rules range from 25 to more than five-hundred dollars. So far, Waco PD says they're getting majority compliance.
