DPS program aims to help drivers pay off suspended license fees

WACO -- If your drivers license is suspended because you haven't been able to pay off fees for traffic violations you now have a chance to get it back.

If you pay a yearly fee to keep your license from being suspended due to a previous violation, you'll only have to pay 10 percent of your total charge, and previous payments can count toward that 10 percent.

Then your slate will be wiped clean.

DPS Spokeswoman, Tela Mange, says legislature recognized people couldn't afford all the charges so they started to program the program.

"Certainly it's against the law for people to drive when their drivers license is invalid, but we recognize that people are doing that and this is a way to get them back into the good graces of the law," said Mange.

There are about 3 million Texans who have unpaid fees.

DPS says the surcharges are administrative fees that are added on to a persons initial fines for violations such as DWIs and too many speeding tickets.

The incentive ends in the middle of April so DPS is encouraging everyone to step up and pay.
