WACO -- A day trip to Houston left one local pilot just yards from a runway but without any fuel.
It happened Wednesday afternoon as the 62-year-old pilot flying a single-engine plane alone, landed within 500 yards of the TSTC runway and about a mile from a neighborhood.
But TSTC Police Chief Gudenau said it was the pilots experience that that kept the crash landing from being a tragedy.
"What I did find out through the initial investigation and talking with him is that he's been flying for about 30 years and I can attribute that 30 years of experience to where he put the plane down and why nobody got hurt," Chief Gudenau said.
The plane is still in fair condition and landed in a grassy, open area.
The pilot was not injured and the investigation is ongoing.
