A man is dead and another is seriously injured, following a fatal accident near Elm Mott early Thursday morning.

According to DPS Trooper D.L. Wilson, the accident occurred at 12:34 a.m., near the 345 milepost. Construction crews were out working and picking up debris, against the outside concrete wall on Interstate 35. A truck tractor slammed into the back of one of the safety crew's truck's with a crash bar on it. The collision caused the safety crew's truck to crash into two of the workers standing nearby.

Josh McGowan, 41, of Dallas was pronounced dead at the scene. Another worker was taken to Hillcrest Hospital and later life-flighted to Scott and White Hospital. He lost the bottom part of his leg due to injuries. Both men work for Brooklyn Sweep Company, out of Dallas.

Another Brooklyn Sweep Company worker was injured inside of the safety vehicle and was transported and later released from Hillcrest hospital for back pain.

The tractor truck driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released. Officers are still investigating the crash, which shut down the southbound portion of the interstate for six hours. However, Wilson says the big rig driver explained it was due to inattentiveness, "He told me he looked down."

Traffic reopened at 6:30 a.m.
