Temple Police are currently investigating a fatal crash that happened Saturday afternoon.

It happened around 2:55 p.m. on December 28, 2013 at the intersection of East Avenue H and South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Temple Police, Temple Fire and Rescue, and Scott & White EMS were called to the scene for a two vehicle crash.

When officials arrived they found a truck, with three occupants inside, one of which died later that day from their injuries. A second occupant died early Sunday morning.

Investigators believe that the truck had been traveling south on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when the truck failed to stop for a red light. The truck then struck an SUV that was traveling east bound on East Avenue H. After the collision, the truck then hit a sedan that was stopped for a red light facing north bound at the intersection.

Temple Fire and Rescue firefighters were able to get the occupants out of the truck and perform life-saving measures.

The driver and two passengers of the truck were taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. One person in the sedan was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck, David Wade Smallwood, 55, of Austin, died at the hospital shortly after arriving.

A second occupant in the truck later succumbed to their injuries. Their name is being held pending next of kin notification.

Temple Police Department Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the incident at this time.
