Fire officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire that broke out at an abandoned North Waco apartment complex this morning.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Chris Pechacek, the fire started after 1 a.m. Thursday morning in the 1700 block of North 15th Street. Two buildings were involved in the blaze, but no one was injured. The apartments have been vacant for years. In fact, officials have them on a list to be taken down; they were just looking for someone to do the work, Pechacek said. As of 10:30 a.m., crews were still on the scene putting out hotspots.

“Our fire marshals were here this morning, earlier, investigating the cause. They’ve taken their notes and their documentation back to their office, and they’re trying to do some in-house work. And, hopefully they’ll come up with a cause here before too long,” said Pechacek.

The cause and the origin of the fire are still unknown at this time. Arson has not been ruled out as a possibility. Last month, officials made note that there were multiple suspicious fires taking place at vacant homes in North Waco.
