Forgotten backpack shuts down Killeen airport
Killeen — Killeen Police officers responded to a report of a suspicious backpack at the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport today, June 27, 2012, just after 7:30am.
Officers working at the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport were notified at 7:40am, of a military style backpack that was left by a white male in the lobby. Airline personnel saw the male walk into the airport with the backpack and he asked them if they could watch the backpack for him. When they told him they would not be able to do that, he put it down in the lobby, walked outside and rode away on a motorcycle.
TSA Personnel scanned the backpack for explosive materials and the results were negative. Airport personnel assisted officers in evacuating approximately 100 people from the airport and all incoming and outgoing flights were delayed for security reasons. The Fort Hood Explosives Ordinance Disposal was contacted and arrived to assist; they used their equipment to move the backpack to a safe place within the airport. As this was taking place, the owner of the backpack returned and spoke with the officers and informed Fort Hood EOD personnel of its contents. Fort Hood identified the contents and cleared the backpack at 9:32am. The owner advised he put the backpack down and when he went outside he forgot to pick it up and take it with him.
This incident continues to be investigated and information will be provided as it becomes available.
