UPDATE - The man who died in the jail on Wednesday was Steven David Evans, DOB 09-16-1953. At the time of booking he reported his home address as 4352 Knob Hill Drive Mobile, Alabama.

Last night Alabama State Troopers located Mr. Evans next of kin and made notification of his death.

-----------------------------------------------

On Tuesday January 1-28-14 Temple Police arrested a Subject for possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Bell County Jail at 4:04 pm. The Subject gave his home address as Mobile Alabama.

Because the Subject had been in the Bell County Jail a number of times the Jail Staff was aware of his medical condition and substance abuse history.

He was placed in the Jail’s Infirmary under medical observation.

Just after 6 am on Wednesday 1-29-14 the Subject began to complain to the medical staff that he was ill. He then collapsed on the floor.

Medical Staff started CPR and Belton Fire Department dispatched an ambulance.

Belton EMS arrived on the scene and continued CPR. After Belton Para-Medic provided medical information to Scott and White Emergency Room, Doctors instructed the Para-Medic to discontinued CPR.

The Subject was pronounced dead at 7:45 am by Judge Don Engleking.

Judge Engleking ordered the body taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy.

Bell County Sheriff’s Investigators continue their investigation at this time.

Investigators as of 5 pm Wednesday have not been able to locate next of kin.

We will release subject name as soon as next of kin is notified.
