Killeen man sentenced to 15 years for downtown Austin shooting death

KILLEEN — A Killeen man has been found guilty of manslaughter for the shooting death of a Pflugerville man during the Texas Relays weekend in March 2013.
Derrick Leroy Kuykendall,23, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the death of Bennie Heslip, 23.
Kuykendall, was found guilty of manslaughter last week and could have faced up to 20 years in prison.
According to an arrest affidavit, on March 31, at 3:15 a.m., police responded to a report of the shooting at a parking lot located at the intersection of Trinity Street and East 11th Street in downtown.
Arriving officers found the victim lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest, the affidavit said.
Witnesses told police that an argument erupted between a friend of Heslip and a female of Kuykendall. Kuykendall approached Heslip and shots were fired.
The 23-year-old was arrested after police received an anonymous tip about the shooting.
