Killeen Police investigating dog attack that left child dead, another injured

Killeen Police are investigating a dog attack on several children.

It happened at 5:00 p.m. in the 4100 block of Pennington Drive Saturday. Officers were called to that location for reports of shots being fired.

While en route to the scene, officers were told that a dog had attacked several children.

On arrival, authorities found a 2-year-old boy suffering from several dog bites.

The boy was immediately taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Another child, an 8-year-old girl, was also taken to a local hospital as well.

Witnesses tell police that an 18-year-old man, and the children listed above were walking home from the playground when a Bull Mastiff ran out from a garage of a home located in the 4100 block of Pennington Drive.

The dog immediately began attacking the girl. Witnesses were able to get the dog away from the girl but he turned and began to attack the 2-year-old boy.

The dog dragged the child down the roadway. That's when shots were fired from an unknown person.

The dog let go of the child and ran back to the home he came from.

The 2-year-old boy later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. by medical personnel.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke has ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

Killeen Animal Control has taken custody of the dog and the dog will remain in their custody while the investigation is ongoing.

The girl is now in stable condition, the names of the victims will not be released at this time.

This incident will continue to be investigated.
