CNN — A Texas school district is appealing a court ruling allowing cheerleaders to display banners with Bible verses at football games.
The Kountze Independent School District wants the court to clarify whether the cheerleaders have a free speech right to include the religious messages.
Earlier this month, a judge ruled the banners were allowed under the U.S. Constitution.
But, the school district claims there was no mention of whether the cheerleaders had a free speech right to them.
School leaders had banned the messages after a group complained.
Attorneys for the cheerleaders call the appeal "unfortunate."
They claim the decision grants free speech even though the ruling does not explicitly say so
