WACO -- Today we honored McLennan County Police Officers who died in the line of duty.

People throughout the city gathered in front of the McLennan County memorial to remember the heroes who sacrificed their lives to keep us safe.

Cindi Stroman is the wife of Police Chief Stroman and brought her third grade class to the memorial to understand that there are people risking their lives every day to keep them safe.

"I feel that it's important for them to realize that there are people who gave their lives for all of us in the line of duty and feel in their heart what these brave men and women have given up for us." said Stroman.

163 U.S. peace officers were killed on duty in 2011.

Texas is the deadliest state for police officers with 13 killed last year.
