Local high school student brain dead after shooting
WACO -- Late Monday night Waco police got a disturbance call at the intersection of Princeton and Rolando across New Road from Waco ISD's Stadium.
"Two vehicles pulled up at the intersection and those two vehicles started exchanging gunfire," said Sgt. Patrick Swanton, Waco P.D.
During the shootout a University High School student, 18-year-old Dominique Garcia, was hit.
"At this point we know we have one individual that was shot in the head. That person was in a vehicle there at the intersection," said Swanton.
After the victim was shot he was placed in a private vehicle and taken to the hospital.
Along the way they were involved in an accident near a Flying J truck stop before breaking down near Don Carlos restaurant off I-35.
There an ambulance came and picked him up and took him to the hospital.
But details of the incident aren't clear.
"We don't have names of the other suspects or how many people were actually involved," said Swanton.
And witnesses aren't helping police.
"We don't know if it's because they were involved or because they were scared for retaliation," said Swanton.
Counselors at University High are available for grieving students and on high alert for further violence or retaliation.
Police say they don't know if this was gang related and so far no one has been arrested.
