Local police department makes record drug bust

Thanks to new equipment, quality officers and a vow to crack down on drugs.

Last night a routine traffic stop turned into the biggest drug bust the Mart Police Department has ever made, showing their formula for success is working.

"Was able to locate three pounds of marijuana, around 8 grams of methamphetamine, individually packaged marijuana, methamphetamine pipes, a lot of paraphernalia," said Chief David Monthey, Chief of Police Mart Police Department.

Police used an unmarked car and new equipment during the bust.

"That car absolutely had a big impact on this," said Monthey.

But last night wasn't their only success, just the biggest.

"We've had somebody arrested in town for either possession of marijuana in a substantial quantity or possession of meth amphetamines. That's been every night since last Friday," said Monthey.

A $30,000 grant from the Dulaney Foundation helped the department assemble a narcotics team, upgrade equipment and add the unmarked vehicle.

But Chief Monthey credits a lot of the department's success to his team.

"I've had to make changes in the department to make those type of officers want to come to work here and that's more important than any equipment you can buy is just the officers and their capabilities and expertise," said Monthey.

He says they are making a solid case to receive more funding, and with more dollars the department will only get stronger.
