On Wednesday morning at approximately 2:30 a.m., a McGregor Police Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a late model Dodge truck travelling south on Main St. in McGregor. As the Officer attempted to stop the Dodge truck for a traffic violation, the sole occupant of the truck sped away in an attempt to evade officers. Several Coryell County Sheriff’s Dept Deputies assisted in the pursuant which terminated on the Leon River Bridge.
As two McGregor Police Officers approached the Dodge truck which had collided with the bridge guard rail, the suspect jumped out of the truck. The suspect then jumped over a rail into approximately 6 to 7 feet of water. Officers attempted to provide life saving efforts by wading into the water at chest high depth. McGregor and Sheriff’s Deputies were unable to locate the suspect in the river.
Local Bell county rescue agencies were called to the scene and at approximately 12 pm, the body of a white male was recovered from the Leon River. The investigation is still ongoing by the McGregor Police Dept. and the Texas Rangers.
