A Bosque County man is dead and a sheriff's deputy is on paid leave following a shooting Monday afternoon.

On May 20, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Bosque County deputies responded to a call of a stabbing in the 130 block of County Road 1607 in Laguna Park, Texas. Deputies arrived at the scene as medical personnel were removing a pregnant female from the home. A male was locked inside the home and refused commands to come out of the house. The female victim stated that the male was on medication and was stabbing himself.

Deputies made entry into the home after seeing blood on the front porch and on the floor inside the house. As deputies were searching for the suspect, they observed large amounts of blood on the floors. The male, identified as Alan Stokes, 22, was located in a darkened bedroom. As deputies ordered Stokes to show his hands and come out, Stokes produced what appeared to be a black colored pistol. Deputies ordered Stokes to drop the gun several times. Stokes pointed the pistol at deputies and made threatening statements. He was ordered again to drop the gun. The lead deputy, fearing for his own life and that of the other deputies, fired at Stokes, striking him in the chest. Medical personnel, already on scene, attended to Stokes' injuries. Stokes died at the scene.

The Bosque County Justice of the Peace was notified, as well as the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are the lead investigative body for officer-involved shootings. The deputy was placed on paid, administrative leave, pending the investigation.
