Waco (KWKT) — Around 5,000 educators with Region 12 made their way into the Ferrell Center for the third annual Regional School Convocation. The ESC Region 12, partnered with Waco ISD to bring the event to educators before the start of the school week.
At the event, guest speakers Dr. Donna M. Beegle and Patrick Briggs focused on how educators can better prepare students in poverty for college. Dr. Beegle, an author, shared her inspirational story of growing up below the poverty level to the teachers from 54 school districts
According to the Educational Service Center Region 12, almost 60 percent of students, in Region 12, are categorized as below the poverty level.
"Let’s try to understand the educational attainment of children and try to pursue that everyday. If we have one goal at Region 12, it's to push student achievement by pushing all the resources and supports back into the classroom,” said Jerry Maze, Executive Director of Educational support for Region 12.
Marlin ISD counselor of the year, Amy Brown, made her way to the podium to remind teachers to stay inspired even on the hard days.” Being and educator is a calling,” said Brown.
The executive director of the Greater Waco Community Education Alliance,Virginia DuPuy said, "ESC Region 12 continues to make a difference in the lives of children in our Region as they host the Regional School Convocation.We welcome these speakers' insights into economically disadvantaged students' challenges. I encourage area leaders working to address community issues related to health, financial security and education, to set aside time to attend the convocation and sense the momentum of our community's will to improve the lives of our youngest citizens."
“These educators are so important in the children's lives, their impactful and crucial to their success," said DuPuy.
The Region 12 District, spans 12 counties and includes 77 school districts and 15 charter schools.
