A Waco firefighter is being treated for second degree burns to his hands that he got while putting out a large house fire in Waco early Tuesday morning. Now, investigators are looking into what caused the fire on North 20th Street. Neighbors believe police should be involved.

Smoke lingers in the air and charred remains are all that's left of a house at 2526 North 20th Street in Waco.

"Nothing can be replaced. All the memories are gone. Everything's gone," said a neighbor who did not wish to be identified.

A fire started inside the home around 10:30 p.m. on Monday and quickly consumed everything. Neighbors say no one was at home at the time of the fire because the homeowner passed away last Saturday. Some say the fire's timing could not be worse.

"The family hasn't even made funeral arrangements yet. And, everything that they worked so hard for, him and his wife, is gone," said a neighbor.

Neighbors suggest that the fire did not start on its own, especially since no one had been there for the past couple of days.

"I don't know if anybody did it, but it seems like it was a coincidence for him to die and all of a sudden his house get burnt up," said neighbor Willie Waits.

Waits lives across the street. He says his neighbor, John Lewis, had been living in the home with his son and his dog for about five years.

"You could come by here anytime. You could talk to him. He would smile, whatever. I mean, anything John could do for you, he'd do it," said Waits.

Neighbors rescued Buddy from the blaze. For now, the neighbor across the street is watching him. And, she says she is certain the fire was set on purpose.

"We saw a car pull up over here. A man got out and went to the house. We had actually seen him throw something, and by the time we saw him get in the car and drive off, we saw fire coming from the front."

Fire officials are still investigating. No word yet if they believe it is arson.
