Those living on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Harlem Lane in Bryan won't have to worry about flooding anymore.

Wednesday city officials celebrated the completion of the culvert replacement project.

For the past year crews have worked to replace the old culvert which constantly flooded every time it rained, flooding the streets and making it difficult for residents and students at Kemp Elementary to get through.

The new culvert is two and a half times the drainage capacity of the old one.

"This is a prime route to school and not having to find an alternate route is important," said flood plain administrator, Brett McCully. "A lot of pedestrians here, a lot of folks walking to school here would otherwise have to find a different route. This gives them not just a way but a safe way."

The project was funded through the city's drainage utility fund and cost a little over $386,000.
