Hewitt, TX — A new veterans memorial will be unveiled this 4th of July at Hewitt Park.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6008 teamed up with the city to build a new memorial dedication statue. According to Jim Pless, VFW Post 6008 Commander, over the past several years the Independance Day service has grown exponentially. Last year the service had more than 300 community members attend. A different scenario from just a few years ago when there were only 30.
Pless said, raising money for the statue was a community effort and the city went above and beyond for the new memorial.
"A while back we decided to team up with the city and see if we could put up a memorial in the city of Hewitt Park. They agreed, gave us the property, gave us a little spot to put it and actually they went a little above and beyond, they put the base in for it, a pentagon base."
Construction for the statue began in March and the city spent about $2,000 to create a concrete pentagon shaped base.
The unveiling ceremony will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Hewitt Park.
