Today was supposed to be a day of celebrating the New Year and new possibilities but instead, the community of the Columbus Village Apartments in Hearne is trying to remember a man who they say was wrongfully shot and killed by police Sunday morning.

"I love him. I miss my baby so much," said F'Ledia Satchell, the victim's mother. "Why, why, why? Nobody is telling me anything."

Many details surrounding the shooting are unknown but what we do know is that officers were responding to a call about shots being fired in the parking lot.

When they arrived, that's when things took a deadly turn.

"He wouldn't hurt anyone," said Satchell. "Why did they have to gun him down like that? It didn't have to be that way."

Friends and family gathered here at this spot Sunday night to hold a candle light vigil where they say Satchell's body was left exposed by police for more than six hours.

"We asked if they could just cover him," said Satchell's aunt, Ulanda Nelson. "It was getting light out and the children would be getting up but police told us we needed to back up because it was a crime scene."

Satchell's mother tells us he was mentally challenged and wouldn't hurt a fly.

"Really he has a kid's mind. He couldn't even write or spell his own name."

Making F'Ledia question why her son became the victim.

The Texas Rangers have been called in to assist in the investigation.
