The Bell County Sheriff's Department has confirmed the identity of a man who jumped off a bridge over Lake Belton early Wednesday morning.

McGregor Police pulled over Joshua Joe Barnes, 38, in a silver Dodge pickup just after 2 a.m.

Barnes then engaged law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Gatesville and then towards Temple on Highway 36.

As soon as Barnes arrived to the bridge overpass at Lake Belton, he stopped, got out of his truck, climbed over the rail and then jumped into the water below.

Police believed the 60-foot drop into the shallow water of about six feet was too much to survive and sent in dive team from Morgan Point to find him.

A crew of 12 spent all day searching the water before a diver found Barnes' body.

Barnes' body has been taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy.
