Proposal submitted for downtown riverfront development

Thursday, June 13, 2013 - 1:08pm

A proposal to develop nearly 16 acres of riverfront property in Waco has been turned in. The development of the area is called the Brazos Commons Project.

The city, along with the Downtown Development Corp are seeking a master developer to help shape their vision for a multi-use complex that connects the expanding downtown Waco area to the river, the convention center, and up to I-35, near the new Baylor stadium. Leaders hope to incorporate new destination restaurants, with more hotels, and a variety of residential, commercial, and retail opportunities along the riverfront walkway. They anticipate the city having a "riverwalk feel" similar to the one in San Antonio.

"What we're expecting is that we'll be surprised and excited by the concepts that developers bring us. And, we're expecting wide variety in what those conceptual plans look like," said Megan Henderson, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Corporation in a February 2013 interview.

Proposals were being accepted until Wednesday, June 12. After that, the proposals will be reviewed for an interview process.

The community will get a chance to share their opinions on the designs down the road.
