Investigating fires is a tedious job and often times they aren't easy to solve.

"You're dealing with destroyed property and some of the evidence is lost in the destruction."

William Bouse a fire marshal for the city of Bryan says this year the department has already seen 24 arson cases; a number that is significantly up compared to years past.

And it's a trend other fire departments across the Brazos Valley are noticing too so Navasota Fire Marshal, Richard Caples, came up with an idea to create a regional arson task force team to help solve the cases.

"Arsonist working in one area may very well slightly move to another area and commit the same kind of crimes and we've seen that happen before," said Bouse.

The Brazos Valley Arson Task Force allows surrounding counties to easily share resources, training, education and information on different cases.

Navasota Fire Chief, Jason Katkoski, says it's a win-win for everyone involved.

"They can all come together, work together on the case and that makes the case stronger if you get more eyes on it helping each other out.," Katkoski said.

The Brazos Valley Arson Task Force held its first meeting in January and is continuing to grow.

In addition to Navasota and Bryan: Brenham, College Station, Brazos County, Houston ATF, Madison County, TEEX and the state fire marshals office are all a part of the organization.

And it's all in an effort to help solve arson cases faster and put the people responsible for the crimes behind bars.
