Gatesville, TX — Gatesville police are investigating the discovery of a skull last weekend, floating in the Leon River.
According to Nathan Gohlke, Chief of Police for Gatesville PD, the skull was discovered around 5:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Brown Park, located in the 100 block of East Leon Street. Two people were looking at the river when one saw the skull, fished it in, and brought it to the police department. Officers were then dispatched to investigate the scene.
"We sent officers down to the park to see if there was anything else linked to the skull," said Gohlke.
The investigation is in the early stages. Police, at this point, say they aren't jumping to conclusions about where the skull came from.
Gohlke says, "It's still way too early to speculate if it's a missing person. It could have been washed out of a shallow grave."
Gohlke says police are still searching for the most appropriate lab to send the skull to for forensic testing. He hopes the tests will reveal information such as the age of the person when he or she died, the gender of that person, and the actual age of the skull.
