When a loved one is seriously injured in an accident you want them to have the best health care there is.

"Trauma's not traumatic just for the patient," said St. Joseph Trauma Program Manger, Sherry Jennings, RN. "Trauma is traumatic for everyone involved including the families because no one necessarily expects for it to happen."

Now, instead of having to travel to Austin or Houston like many have done in the past to get that care, you can stay right here in the Brazos Valley.

"This community is growing and we've had a lot of high-profile incidents in the last few years and we recognize that and know that we need to step up and do the work that needs to be done to take care of our citizens here locally," said Dr. Brandon Lewis, Medical Director for Emergency Services.

For the past two years St. Joseph Hospital administrators have been working with the American College of Surgeons to demonstrate that St. Joe meets all of the required criteria for a Level 2 trauma center.

May 30, the hospital announced its official; St. Joseph is now a state designated Level 2 trauma center.

"We can take care of you," Dr. Adair de Berry-Carlisle said. "It means you don't have to go anywhere. It means we don't need to ship you out, you don't need to go to a major metropolitan area and uproot your family. You don't have to do that. we've got you covered and we can take care of it."

And it's all in an effort to help save more lives.
