State regulators approve increase in electricity price cap

AUSTIN -- Today the Texas Public Utility Commission approved a 50 percent hike in the wholesale electricity price cap.

This is a move advocates hope would spur construction of new power plants to help the state avoid rolling blackouts and meet future energy demands.

The increase will be effective August 1.

Commissioners are also considering a proposal that would triple the wholesale price starting in summer of 2013.
