Student caught with gun at ETX elementary school

Longview officials are investigating why an elementary student was caught with a gun on school grounds Tuesday.

The student was found with the handgun showing it to a friend at the South Ward Elementary School, according to the Longview Police Department.

School officials were first alerted to the gun on campus when friends of the child told a teacher. The gun was confiscated and police were called.

The school, located on the 1000 block of South Mobberly Avenue, was never placed on lockdown as they were already dismissing students at the time for Winter Break.

Authorities have not yet revealed the age of the student.

In a release to KETK, Superintendent Adam Holland says the child had no malicious intent to their knowledge, and it is believed by police and school personnel that he brought the weapon to school to show off to friends. The gun was not fired and there were no injuries.

Longview PD and Longview ISD are both investigating. All parents were notified of the incident.
